Side Effects
TAPDIN Methimazole 5mg common side effects include: skin rashes, itching, hives, and abnormal hair loss. Some patients may also experience joint pain, swelling, nausea, vomiting, or a loss of taste sensation. Serious but rare reactions include agranulocytosis (severe decrease in white blood cells) and liver dysfunction manifested by jaundice.
Directions and Dosage
- Adults (18+ years): Initially 15 to 60 mg daily divided into 3 doses. Maintenance dosage is usually 5 to 15 mg daily.
- Kids 6–17 years: Initially 0.4 mg/kg of body weight daily divided into 3 doses. Maintenance dosage is approximately 0.2 mg/kg daily.
Age restrictions apply for very young children. Maximum daily dosage for adults should not exceed 60 mg. Duration of treatment is typically 6 months to 2 years to achieve remission.
Contraindications
Prohibited for use by individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to the active substance or other thionamide derivatives. It is also contraindicated for those with a history of severe hematological disorders such as agranulocytosis or pre-existing cholestasis.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with rare fetal malformations; however, untreated hyperthyroidism poses higher risks. It is excreted into breast milk in small amounts, and infant thyroid function must be monitored closely if taken while nursing.
Special Precautions
- Immediate monitoring is required if symptoms of fever, sore throat, or skin eruptions occur.
- Liver function should be monitored regularly to detect signs of hepatotoxicity.
- Treatment must be paused before undergoing radioactive iodine therapy.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
Interactions may occur with anticoagulants, necessitating dosage adjustments of the blood thinner. Concomitant use with beta-blockers or digitalis glycosides may require a reduction in those medications as thyroid status improves.
How should I store it?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
