Indications
Hyperthyroidism, Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, Thyroid storm
Dosage
Methimazole is usually given in 3 equal doses at approximately 8 hours intervals.
Adult: Initial dose of 15mg to 60 mg daily, may be given in divided doses or as a single dose.
In Euthyroid patients: The usual dose is 5mg to 15mg daily. Maintenance dose: 5mg to 15mg daily.
Children: Initial dose is 400mcg per kg body weight, for maintenance, this dose may be halved, or as directed by a physician.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Previous damage to bone marrow or other serious adverse effects associated with treatment of thiamazole or other thioamides (e.g. carbimazole, propylthiouracil).
Special Precautions
Patient with moderate to severe granulocytopenia, pre-existing cholestasis (not caused by hyperthyroidism). Hepatic and renal impairment. Children. Pregnancy (particularly during 1st trimester) and lactation.
