PIROX Piroxicam 20mg is used for the management of chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also indicated for the short-term relief of acute gout, working as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The substance functions by inhibiting the body's natural processes that cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints and muscles, thereby improving mobility.

Side Effects

PIROX Piroxicam 20mg common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as stomach discomfort, nausea, and vomiting, along with potential for headache and dizziness. Fluid retention leading to ankle and foot swelling is also frequently reported, due to the substance’s action. Serious, though less common, risks involve ulceration, bleeding in the stomach or intestine, and an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events like sudden weakness or chest pain.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults (18+ years): 20 mg once daily. This may also be given as 10 mg twice daily. Do not exceed 20 mg in 24 hours for chronic use.
• Dosage for Kids (Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis): Dosing is based on body weight. For those weighing 15 kg or less: 5 mg daily. For 16–25 kg: 10 mg daily. For 26–45 kg: 15 mg daily.

Not recommended for infants or young children for common use. Dosage duration is based on the chronic condition being managed.

Contraindications

Avoid using this product if there is a known sensitivity to its contents or to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. It is strictly avoided in individuals with a history of active gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or perforation, as well as those with severe heart failure. Use is also restricted in patients who have recently undergone heart bypass surgery.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Use must be avoided starting around 20 weeks of pregnancy and in the third trimester as there is a definite risk to the developing baby and potential delivery complications. The active substance can pass into breast milk, making its use generally not recommended while nursing.

Special Precautions

• Caution is necessary for individuals with hypertension, compromised kidney function, or reduced liver function.
• It may increase the risk of serious side effects affecting the cardiovascular system, including the potential for stroke or heart attack.
• Long-term usage, especially in the elderly, increases the potential for serious gastrointestinal adverse events.
• This medication can cause severe skin reactions that may be life-threatening.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Concomitant use with certain blood pressure medications, particularly diuretics, may decrease their effectiveness and increase the risk of kidney problems. Combining this product with blood-thinning agents significantly elevates the danger of serious internal bleeding.
