GENTAKAST-5 Montelukast 5mg is used for the long-term management and prevention of chronic asthma in adults and pediatric patients. It is also indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion. Furthermore, this medication helps in preventing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). This tablet reduces inflammation and swelling in the airways and nose to help make breathing easier.

Side Effects
GENTAKAST-5 Montelukast 5mg common side effects include: upper respiratory tract infection, headache, fever, cough, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and influenza.
Less frequently, individuals may experience neuropsychiatric events, such as agitation, anxiety, depression, abnormal dreams, disorientation, hallucinations, or insomnia. It is also important to monitor for signs of increased bleeding tendency, such as bruising, and symptoms of liver issues, which may present as nausea, vomiting, or yellowing of the skin and eyes. These serious side effects are rare.
Directions and Dosage
- Dosage for Kids 6–14 years old: 5 mg taken once daily in the evening for asthma or allergic rhinitis treatment.
- Dosage for Kids 6–14 years old (EIB Prevention): 5 mg should be taken at least 2 hours before exercise. Do not take an additional dose within 24 hours of a previous dose.
- Age Restriction: Not recommended for children under 6 years old for this 5 mg strength.
- Maximum Daily Dosage: Do not exceed 5 mg in 24 hours for children 6–14 years old.
Contraindications
Avoid use if there is a known sensitivity to any component of this product. It must not be used to treat or reverse a sudden, acute asthma attack, as it is not an emergency medication. Caution is advised for those with severe liver impairment. It is also not suitable for patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) because the chewable formulation contains aspartame.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
The safe use of the product during pregnancy has not been definitively established. It is recommended to use the medication during this time only if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risk. Since it is unknown if the active substance passes into human milk, caution should be exercised if nursing.
Special Precautions
- Monitor for changes in behavior and mood, including signs of agitation, hostility, or suicidal thoughts, and seek immediate attention if these occur.
- This is not a fast-acting rescue medicine and should not be used for acute asthma attacks, including status asthmaticus.
- Patients with known aspirin sensitivity should continue to avoid aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) while taking this product.
- Use with caution in individuals with a history of mental health problems or depression.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
The product can usually be taken alongside other respiratory treatments, like inhaled corticosteroids. However, it is known to interact with certain medications such as phenobarbital and rifampicin, which may decrease the overall effectiveness of the product. It is advisable to discuss all concurrent medications before starting this product.
