Bactroban 2% Mupirocin Ointment is used for treating bacterial skin infections like impetigo, folliculitis, and infected wounds. It effectively targets gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This topical antibiotic also helps eliminate MRSA colonization in nasal passages when applied intranasally.

Formulation / Ingredients
Bactroban 2% Mupirocin Ointment contains: Mupirocin 20mg per gram (2% w/w) in a polyethylene glycol base.

Side Effects

Bactroban 2% Mupirocin Ointment common side effects include: burning, stinging, or pain at application site in approximately 3% of users. Less frequently reported reactions include itching (pruritus), rash, dryness, and localized edema. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate discontinuation.

Directions and Dosage

  • Adults and adolescents (12+ years): Apply thin layer 3 times daily. Maximum treatment duration: 10 days
  • Children (3 months-11 years): Apply thin layer 3 times daily. Maximum treatment duration: 10 days

Not recommended for infants under 3 months. Do not exceed affected area. For nasal use: Apply half-tube (approx 0.25g) per nostril twice daily for 5 days.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or polyethylene glycol. Avoid use on burns, large open wounds, or mucous membranes except for nasal application in approved formulations.
