Bactreat Mupirocin Ointment is used for treating bacterial skin infections like impetigo, folliculitis, and infected wounds. It effectively targets infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This topical antibiotic is also indicated for eliminating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization. Use it only for bacterial skin conditions as improper application may reduce effectiveness.

Side Effects
Bactreat Mupirocin Ointment common side effects include: localized burning, stinging, or pain at application site; itching; and mild skin dryness or erythema. Less frequently, patients may experience headache, nausea, or secondary infections. Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulties) require immediate discontinuation and medical attention.
Directions and Dosage
- Adults and adolescents (12+ years): Apply thin layer 3 times daily to affected area. Maximum treatment duration: 10 days.
- Children (2 months–11 years): Apply thin layer 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 days without reevaluation.
- Infants under 2 months: Not recommended without physician supervision.
Cover treated area with gauze if needed. Wash hands before/after application. Avoid eyes, nose, mouth, and mucous membranes. Discontinue if no improvement occurs after 3–5 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or polyethylene glycol components. Avoid use on chemical burns, large open wounds, or severe tissue damage without medical supervision.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Systemic absorption is minimal with topical use. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential fetal risk. Consult healthcare provider during breastfeeding.
Special Precautions
- Not for ophthalmic, nasal, or intravaginal use
- Discontinue if severe irritation or allergic reaction develops
- Prolonged use may cause antibiotic resistance or superinfections
