FEROLEM Ferrous Sulfate Oral Drops for Baby is used for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, which can result from inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, or increased requirement. Iron is a vital mineral necessary for the production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen throughout the body. Supplementation helps to restore normal hemoglobin levels and replenish the body’s iron stores, promoting overall health and supporting normal development in infants and children.

Side Effects

FEROLEM Ferrous Sulfate Oral Drops for Baby common side effects include: gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and either constipation or diarrhea. The severity of these effects is often related to the dosage amount. A very common and expected effect is the darkening of stools, which is harmless. These drops may also cause temporary staining of the teeth. Side effects can often be minimized by taking the drops with or after food, or by gradually adjusting the amount taken over time.

Directions and Dosage

Dosage is based on the amount of elemental iron (15 mg per 0.6 mL) and should be measured accurately using the provided dropper.

• Dosage for Infants (Treatment): 3 mg of elemental iron/kg of body weight per day, divided into 3 to 4 daily administrations.
• Dosage for Preterm Infants (Prevention): 2 mg of elemental iron/kg of body weight per day, up to a maximum of 15 mg daily. Should start no later than 2 months of age and continue for at least the remainder of the first year of life.

The standard treatment duration is typically 4 to 6 months to reverse uncomplicated deficiency, but the total duration is determined by the patient's condition. Do not exceed the maximum daily amount.

Contraindications

This product is not suitable for individuals with a known over-accumulation of the mineral in the body, such as in primary hemochromatosis. It should also be avoided by patients with a history of digestive tract conditions like peptic ulcers, regional enteritis, or ulcerative colitis, and those with a known hypersensitivity to any of the preparation's components.

Special Precautions

• Do not administer this product to treat non-deficiency related blood cell disorders unless a coexisting deficiency is present.
• Avoid administering therapeutic amounts of the mineral for longer than 6 months.
• Do not administer with the form of the mineral given by injection to prevent excessive accumulation.
• Absorption of the mineral is reduced when taken simultaneously with tea, coffee, milk, eggs, or whole grains.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This supplement can significantly decrease the absorption of certain antibiotics and medications for bone health and thyroid problems. To ensure proper absorption, separate the administration of this product and other oral medications by several hours. Antacids should not be taken at the same time as this preparation.

How should I store it?

Store in a closed container at a cool room temperature, ideally below 25°C. Protect the container from direct light and keep it out of reach of young children.
