EUTHYROX Levothyroxine 100mcg is used for substitution therapy to replace natural thyroid hormones when the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient amounts (hypothyroidism). It is also employed for the treatment of benign enlargement of the thyroid gland (euthyroid goiter) and for the prophylaxis of relapse following surgical removal of euthyroid goiter. Furthermore, this medication is used in suppression therapy for thyroid cancer to inhibit tumor growth and as a supplementary treatment during anti-thyroid drug therapy for hyperthyroidism.

Side Effects

- Dosage for Neonates and Infants (0-3 months) with Congenital Hypothyroidism: Initial dose is 10-15 mcg/kg of body weight daily.
Contraindications
Do not use this medication if you have an untreated adrenal gland disorder, an untreated pituitary insufficiency, or an untreated state of overactive thyroid function.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
This medication is generally considered safe and is the preferred treatment for low thyroid levels during pregnancy. Untreated deficiency in the body can pose risks to fetal development. It does pass into breast milk, but in amounts that are typically considered safe.
Special Precautions
- Extreme caution is necessary when starting therapy in patients over 50 years old or those with existing heart conditions like coronary heart disease, as over-treatment may precipitate heart problems.
- Patients with diabetes should have their blood sugar levels carefully monitored, as treatment may require adjustments to anti-diabetic medications.
- Those with a history of weak bones (osteoporosis) should avoid supra-physiological levels of the active ingredient.
Is it safe to take it with other medications?
The drug can increase the effects of blood thinners, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. Medicines containing iron, calcium salts, or aluminum (like antacids) can significantly reduce absorption and must be taken hours apart. Certain medications for depression or seizure disorders may also require dosage adjustments.
