Indications / Uses

LESTOR Atorvastatin 40mg is used for lowering excessively high levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol), apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides as a complement to dietary management. This strength is frequently initiated for patients requiring a significant reduction (greater than 45%) in their LDL-C levels. It is an essential part of managing primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It also contributes to the reduction of cardiovascular event risks in people with multiple risk factors.

Side Effects

LESTOR Atorvastatin 40mg common side effects include: joint pain, muscle pain in the limbs, headache, and nasopharyngitis. Digestive issues such as upset stomach, nausea, or diarrhea may also occur. A small number of users may experience muscle weakness or tenderness, which, if left unaddressed, can lead to severe muscle breakdown. Less frequently, changes in liver function tests, indicative of potential liver problems, may be observed.

Directions and Dosage 

• Dosage for Adults: The starting dosage is typically 10 mg or 20 mg once daily, but for those requiring a greater than 45% reduction in bad cholesterol, the starting dose may be 40 mg once daily. The dose can range from 10 mg to 80 mg once daily.
• Dosage for Kids 10 years and older (for Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia): Initially 10 mg once daily, not to exceed 20 mg once daily.

Maximum daily dosage is 80 mg once daily for adults and 20 mg once daily for most children/adolescents with HeFH. Lipid levels should be checked within 2 to 4 weeks after starting or adjusting the dosage, and the dose modified as needed.

Contraindications

This product is prohibited for use by anyone with active liver disease or persistently elevated, unexplained liver enzyme levels. It should not be used if there is a known hypersensitivity to the primary component or any other ingredients in the tablet. It is also not suitable during periods of pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

The product is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy due to the essential need for cholesterol and related substances in fetal development. Women who may become pregnant must use effective methods to prevent conception during the course of administration. Nursing mothers should avoid using this product.

Special Precautions

• Before initiating treatment, other methods like diet, weight loss, and exercise should be attempted to manage high lipid levels.
• Avoid or severely limit alcohol intake as it increases the chance of adverse effects on the liver.
• Regular monitoring of liver function is necessary during the treatment period.
• Immediate discontinuation is necessary if unexplained severe muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness develops.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Co-administration with certain antifungal agents, antibiotics, or medications used to treat HIV can significantly increase the level of this product in the body, raising the risk of serious muscle side effects. Concurrent use of large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than 1 liter daily) should be avoided as it can also elevate its concentration.

How should I store it?

Keep the product at cool room temperatures, not exceeding 30°C. It should be kept in a dry area, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
