PYRAMIN Pyrazinamide Syrup is used for the initial phase treatment of active tuberculosis in both pulmonary and extrapulmonary forms of the disease. It is a necessary component of combination therapy that aims to effectively eliminate the mycobacterium and prevent the rapid development of bacterial resistance. This antituberculosis agent acts within the acidic environment of inflammatory sites and macrophages, contributing to the overall sterilizing action of the regimen.

Side Effects

PYRAMIN Pyrazinamide Syrup common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, alongside general feelings of discomfort or malaise. This drug is also well-known for causing joint pain (arthralgia) and muscle aches (myalgia), and it frequently leads to hyperuricemia, which can sometimes trigger acute gouty arthritis. A serious potential effect involves liver changes (hepatotoxicity), and less commonly reported reactions include fever, rash, itching, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults and Kids: 15 to 30 mg per kilogram of body weight, taken once daily.
• Maximum Daily Dosage: Do not exceed 2000 mg (2 g) in a 24-hour period.
• Duration of Treatment: This agent is typically administered for the initial 2 months of a complete anti-tuberculosis treatment regimen.

Dosage is based on body weight and must be strictly followed. The total treatment duration for the disease is usually 6 months or longer.

Contraindications

This product should not be used in cases of pre-existing severe liver impairment or acute liver damage. It is also contraindicated for individuals with a history of acute gouty arthritis, or known hypersensitivity to the compound.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Pregnancy: Should be used only if the potential benefit to the user clearly outweighs any potential risk to the fetus.

Lactation: The compound has been detected in breast milk in small quantities. Caution is advised when administering this product to nursing mothers.

Special Precautions

• Regular monitoring of liver function and serum uric acid levels is highly recommended, especially for individuals with prior liver conditions.
• Special care should be taken when administered to users with a history of diabetes, as it may complicate disease management.
• Therapy should be stopped immediately and not resumed if signs of serious liver cell damage or a flare-up of gouty arthritis are observed.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Taking this agent alongside Cyclosporine may result in reduced blood levels of the latter drug, necessitating close monitoring. Additionally, when used in combination with other anti-tuberculosis treatments, there is an increased potential for liver-related adverse effects, which requires vigilance.

How should I store it?

Store the product at controlled room temperature, away from excessive moisture and heat. Ensure it is kept in the original, tightly closed container to protect it from light.
