Indications / Uses

OPTRYL Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment is used for the treatment and prevention of bacterial eye infections including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis. It is effective against various gram-positive and some gram-negative organisms that commonly cause ocular infections. This antibiotic ointment provides prolonged contact with the ocular surface for enhanced therapeutic effect. It may also be used for neonatal ocular prophylaxis to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum.

Side Effects

OPTRYL Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment common side effects include: temporary eye irritation, burning, or stinging upon application; blurred vision; redness; and watery eyes. These effects are typically mild and subside quickly as the eyes adjust to the medication. Some users may experience itching, swelling, or sensitivity to light. Discontinue use and seek medical advice if severe reactions like rash or persistent irritation occur.

Directions and Dosage

  • Adults and Adolescents (12+ years): Apply a 1 cm ribbon to the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times daily. Space applications evenly throughout waking hours.
  • Children (2-11 years): Apply a 0.5 cm ribbon to the affected eye(s) 2 to 3 times daily. Do not exceed 4 applications in 24 hours.
  • Infants (0-23 months): Apply a 0.5 cm ribbon to each eye once daily for prophylaxis. For treatment, apply 2-3 times daily as directed.

Treatment typically continues for 7-10 days or as directed. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve earlier. Wash hands before and after application.

Contraindications

Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to erythromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or any component of the formulation. Avoid use in viral eye infections unless there is a confirmed bacterial component.

Special Precautions

  • Avoid allowing the tube tip to contact any surface to prevent contamination.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while experiencing an eye infection.
  • Temporary blurred vision may occur after application; avoid driving or operating machinery until vision clears.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Inform your healthcare provider about all other eye medications you are using. Wait at least 5 minutes before applying other ophthalmic products to prevent interactions and ensure proper absorption.

How should I store it?

Store at room temperature (15-30°C). Keep the tube tightly closed and protect from light. Do not freeze. Discard 4 weeks after first opening.
