Indications / Uses

PONSTAN SF Mefenamic Acid 500mg is used for the symptomatic relief of mild to moderate pain and inflammation associated with various conditions. This includes pain from musculoskeletal and joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, including Still's Disease, and osteoarthritis. It is also effective for relieving other types of pain, including dental, muscular, and traumatic pain, as well as headaches, post-operative, and post-partum pain. Additionally, this product is indicated for the symptomatic relief of primary dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia due to dysfunctional causes, and premenstrual syndrome.

Side Effects

PONSTAN SF Mefenamic Acid 500mg common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as loose bowel movements, nausea with or without vomiting, upset stomach, and abdominal pain. Other common effects are headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness, and occasionally, skin reactions like rash or itching. Serious, though less common, side effects can involve gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration, as well as potential cardiovascular thrombotic events like heart attack or stroke, which may be fatal.

Directions and Dosage

• Dosage for Adults and Adolescents (over 14 years): 500 mg initially, followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed.
• Dosage for Adults (Rheumatoid Arthritis/Osteoarthritis/Pain): 500 mg three times daily.
• Dosage for Kids over 6 months to 14 years (for fever): 19.5 mg/kg to 25 mg/kg of body weight daily in divided doses three times daily.

Do not exceed a daily dosage of 2000 mg (2.0 g). For the relief of acute pain and fever, do not take continuously beyond 7 days.

Contraindications

The product should not be used if there is a history of hypersensitivity to the ingredients or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, or if they induce symptoms such as asthma or hives. Avoid use in patients with active ulceration or chronic inflammation of the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract, pre-existing renal disease, or severe heart impairment. It should also be avoided in those with a history of stroke, heart attack, or following heart bypass surgery.

Special Precautions

• The lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration possible to minimize potential cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risks.
• Use with caution in individuals with pre-existing high blood pressure or fluid retention, as this product can lead to new or worsening hypertension.
• Monitoring is advised for individuals with clotting impairment, as this product can decrease blood clotting.
• Discontinue use immediately if skin rash, diarrhea, or any sign of hypersensitivity or serious gastrointestinal event occurs.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

Use with caution with blood thinning agents, as this combination may significantly increase the risk of serious bleeding. It may also lessen the effects of medications used to treat high blood pressure and can increase the risk of kidney toxicity when taken with certain other drugs.

How should I store it?

The product should be stored in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep it away from children and protect it from light and moisture.
