Indications / Uses

NOVAKAST-4 Montelukast 4mg is used for the chronic treatment and management of asthma in children aged 2 to 5 years, including the prevention of both day and night time symptoms. This medication is also indicated for the prevention of breathing difficulties caused by exercise in patients 2 years of age and older. Furthermore, it provides effective relief for the symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Side Effects

NOVAKAST-4 Montelukast 4mg common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, headache, gastrointestinal discomfort such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea, as well as fever and cough. Less common but serious side effects involve neuropsychiatric changes such which may include agitation, aggressive behavior, anxiety, abnormal dreams, depression, insomnia, and in rare cases, suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Patients should also watch for signs of a severe allergic reaction or an increased risk of eosinophilic conditions, which can present as a flu-like illness with numbness or tingling in the limbs.

Directions and Dosage

  • Dosage for Kids 2–5 years old (Asthma & Chronic Allergic Rhinitis): 4 mg (one chewable tablet) once daily in the evening.
  • Dosage for Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) (2 years & older): 4 mg (one chewable tablet) taken at least 2 hours before exercise.

The maximum daily dosage is 4 mg (one tablet). Do not take a second dose within 24 hours of a previous dose. Not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Treatment duration depends on the underlying condition.

Contraindications

This product is contraindicated for individuals who have known sensitivity or allergy to any of its components. Caution should be exercised in patients with Phenylketonuria (PKU), as the chewable tablet formulation contains a source of phenylalanine.

Special Precautions

  • Not intended for immediate relief of sudden, acute asthma attacks; patients should use a fast-acting inhaler for those episodes.
  • Observe for sudden changes in behavior or mood, including anxiety, depression, agitation, and sleep disorders.
  • Patients sensitive to aspirin should continue to avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) while using this treatment.
  • Monitor for signs of eosinophilic conditions, which may present as flu-like symptoms, numbness, or tingling in the arms and legs.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This medicine is generally well-tolerated and can be used safely alongside many other respiratory treatments, including inhaled corticosteroids. However, certain medicines that affect the body's enzyme system may reduce the effectiveness of this product, making it less potent. If you are taking drugs for seizures or tuberculosis, caution is advised.

How should I store it?

Keep the product at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. It must be protected from both light and moisture to ensure quality and stability.
