Overdosage
There is very little experience of intentional overdose. Overdose with aluminum salts is easier to detect in patients with severe chronic kidney failure who have the following symptoms: encephalopathy, seizures and dementia. As in all cases of overdose, treatment is symptomatic and involves general supportive measures.
Treatment of overdose with magnesium: rehydration, forced diuresis. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is required in patients with kidney failure.
In case of accidental ingestion or absorption of an excessive dose of MAALOX PLUS, immediately inform the doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
If unsure of how to use MAALOX PLUS, ask a doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings
Due to its composition, MAALOX PLUS does not generally affect the functioning of the large intestine. However, in some particularly sensitive patients and at high dosages, accelerated intestinal transit may occur. Do not use as long-term treatment.
Like other aluminum-based medicines, MAALOX PLUS may have a constrictive effect and cause constipation. At high doses, it can cause intestinal blockage.
If on a low-phosphorus diet, the patient should be aware that aluminum hydroxide may cause phosphorus deficiency.
In patients with severe forms of kidney failure, prolonged use of this medicine should be avoided. If there are no clear results after a short period of treatment, consult a doctor.
Patients who must consult a doctor before taking MAALOX PLUS: Children, pregnant and breast-feeding women (see Use in Pregnancy & Lactation) and patients with kidney failure.
Driving and using machines: MAALOX PLUS has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.
Important information about some of the ingredients of MAALOX PLUS: These tablets contain sucrose: this should be taken into account in patients with diabetes who are on a reduced-calorie diet.
If the patient is intolerant of sugars, consult the doctor before taking MAALOX PLUS chewable tablets or MAALOX PLUS oral suspension.
Each MAALOX PLUS chewable tablet contains 500 mg of glucose.
If the tablets are taken in compliance with the maximum recommended dosage (16 tablets per day), the daily glucose intake is equivalent to 8 g.
The oral suspension contains methylparaben and propylparaben, which can cause (sometimes delayed) allergic reactions.
Read all of this monograph carefully before the patient starts taking this medicine: This medicine can be used as an over-the-counter medicine to treat mild temporary conditions that are easy to identify and that can be treated without consulting a doctor.
It can therefore be obtained without a prescription but must be used correctly to ensure that it works and to limit side effects.
For more information and advice, please consult a pharmacist.
Consult a doctor if the symptoms do not resolve after a short period of treatment.
Oral suspension: Do not take more than 16 teaspoonful (80 mL) in a 24-hour period or use the maximum dosage for more than two weeks. Do not use if the patient has kidney disease except under the advise and supervision of a physician.

Drug Interactions
Tell the doctor or pharmacist if the patient has recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Since aluminum and magnesium salts reduce the gastrointestinal absorption of tetracyclines, the patient should avoid treatment with MAALOX PLUS when taking tetracycline by mouth.
The use of antacids containing aluminum can reduce the absorption of H2 antagonists, atenolol, cefdinir, cefpodoxime, chloroquine, tetracyclines, diflunisal, digoxin, bisphosphonates, ethambutol, fluoroquinolones, sodium fluoride, glucocorticoids, indomethacin, isoniazid, kayexalate, ketoconazole, lincosamides, metoprolol, phenothiazine neuroleptics, penicillamine, propranolol, iron salts.
Allow at least 2 hours to pass (4 hours for fluoroquinolones) before taking MAALOX PLUS to avoid interactions with the other medicines.
Using quinidine simultaneously may lead to an increase in blood quinidine levels and cause a quinidine overdose.
Using aluminum hydroxide at the same time as citrates may lead to an increase in aluminum levels, particularly in patients with kidney failure.
