Indications/Uses
Carbocisteine + zinc (Solmux Advance) is used to provide relief of cough associated with respiratory tract disorders such as acute bronchitis. Carbocisteine also reduces the number of exacerbations associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inhibits the adherence of bacteria and viruses to human respiratory cells. Carbocisteine is also used in the treatment of otitis media with effusion (glue ear).
Zinc helps boost the immune function.

Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab: Adults and Children 12 years and older: 1 tab every 8 hours, or as recommended by a doctor.
Susp: Adult and children 12 years and older 5 mL every 8 hours.

Overdosage
Signs and Symptoms: Carbocisteine overdose is usually associated with stomach or intestinal discomfort.
Rare occurrences of acute Zinc poisoning have been reported. The toxicity signs observed after ingestion of high zinc doses (4 to 8 grams elemental zinc) include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, metallic taste, and lethargy (sleepiness).
Signs of acute zinc toxicity (doses >200 mg daily) include gastrointestinal pain/cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, lethargy (sleepiness), muscle pains, and fever.
Prolonged zinc supplementation may cause impairment of copper and iron status, and anemia at doses >50 mg/day immune deficiency, reduced blood high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, and gastric erosion at doses >150 mg daily.
Long-tern (average 6.3 years).
If the patient has taken more than the recommended dosage, consult a doctor or contact a poison control center right away.

Action
Solmux Advance contains carbocisteine and zinc.
Carbocisteine causes phlegm to be less thick and sticky and thus easier to cough up and expel.
Carbocisteine, in an in vitro study (outside the living organism), was shown to have significantly reduced the ability of bacteria and viruses to adhere to human respiratory cells.
Zinc helps regulate the growth, maturation and activity of cells involved in immune function, and has been shown to help the body fight viruses and bacteria. It also functions as an antioxidant by being a cofactor of the enzyme superoxide dismutase, which is involved in the removal of harmful free radicals.
The combination of carbocisteine and zinc provides complementary actions against acute respiratory infection addressing both altered mucus viscosity and low zinc concentrations in respiratory infections.
