Description

Indications / Uses

AMBILYTE Oral Rehydration Salts is used for the management and treatment of dehydration resulting from acute diarrhea and other conditions involving excessive fluid loss, such as vomiting. This powder solution works by rapidly replacing the essential water and electrolytes, including sodium and potassium, that the body loses during episodes of gastroenteritis. It aids in restoring the body's normal fluid balance, a critical step in the recovery process for both adults and children experiencing mild to moderate fluid loss, by leveraging the combined presence of salts and sugar to facilitate faster water absorption in the intestine.

Formulation / Ingredients

AMBILYTE Oral Rehydration Salts contains: Sodium Chloride 0.65 g + Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate 0.85 g + Potassium Chloride 0.375 g + Glucose, Anhydrous 3.375 g

Side Effects

AMBILYTE Oral Rehydration Salts common side effects include temporary nausea and occasional vomiting, which are often signs that the solution was consumed too quickly. These effects usually subside when consumption is paused briefly and then resumed at a slower, more gradual rate. When the preparation is not diluted correctly or if an excessive amount is consumed unnecessarily, there is a risk of electrolyte imbalance, specifically elevated levels of sodium (hypernatremia) or potassium (hyperkalemia) in the blood. Signs of severe imbalance may involve dizziness, muscle twitching, or swelling in the feet and ankles. It is essential to strictly follow the mixing instructions to avoid these complications.

Directions and Dosage

The powder contents of one sachet must be completely dissolved in 250 mL (approximately one glass) of cooled boiled water before administration. The dosage is dependent on the level of fluid loss.

  • Dosage for Infants and Kids less than 2 years old: Give 50 mL to 100 mL (1/4 to 1/2 glass) of the solution after every loose bowel movement.
  • Dosage for Kids 2 to 10 years old: Give 100 mL to 250 mL (1/2 to 1 glass) of the solution after every loose bowel movement.
  • Dosage for Adults and Kids 10 years and above: Give 250 mL (1 glass) or more of the solution after every loose bowel movement, drinking as much as desired until the fluid loss stops.

Contraindications

The solution should not be used if there is a known sensitivity to any of the components of the powder. It is also not suitable for individuals with a condition that prevents the proper absorption of sugar from the gastrointestinal tract.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

No contraindications are known for using the product during gestation or while providing sustenance to an infant.

Special Precautions

  • Consumption should be stopped for 10 minutes if retching occurs, and then resumed in smaller, more frequent amounts.
  • Care must be taken when managing severe fluid loss; alternative administration methods may be required if the condition is critical.
  • Always ensure the powder is fully dissolved in the recommended amount of clean, cooled, boiled water before administration.

Is it safe to take it with other medications?

This solution is generally considered safe to be taken alongside other oral treatments. However, it should not be mixed with or consumed alongside highly sugary drinks such as soda or undiluted juice, as these can disrupt the necessary electrolyte balance and hinder recovery.

How should I store it?

The sealed powder should be kept away from excessive heat and stored below 25 °C. Once the powder has been mixed with water, the prepared liquid solution must be refrigerated and used within 24 hours.
